Okra: A Heat-tolerant Vegetable Growing at the Learning Garden
Okra is a plant that can take the heat! It has beautiful flowers and produces edible pods that can be cooked in a variety of ways: baked, fried, steamed, pickled, grilled, or boiled. Here's a demonstration of okra plants grown by Master Gardeners at the Maryland State Fair Learning Garden in the summer of 2024!

Aphids and Whiteflies on Kale
Переглядів 18814 днів тому
Aphids and whiteflies are common insect pests on kale. Both aphids and whiteflies have straw-like mouthparts to feed on plant juice and thus do not cause chewing damage. Be on the lookout for these pests, as they can have several generations over the summer. Avoid spraying insecticidal soap and horticultural oil on plants when temperatures are above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Applying these chemica...
Serviceberry Trees: Rust Disease and Lace Bugs
Переглядів 5902 місяці тому
Serviceberries (Amelanchier spp.) are popular small flowering native trees for Maryland landscapes. They have white flowers in early spring, followed by edible berries in early summer. These trees provide a lot of support for native wildlife, including pollinators and birds. If you grow a serviceberry, there are some very common conditions you might see on your tree: rust and lace bugs. These c...

How do i get rid of it? Im about to stick the four i found in the trash. Do they bite or sting?
Die auch Beauty ❤
ty for educating us as a new gardener
We get the little ones in our house all the time and you'll just hear them clicking away 😂
on your nails too!
Cool information. I appriciate you doing this video
Just found a bunch of these little nasty pupa on a random weed in my mom’s garden I saved one and smashed the rest. It’s the first year she grew potato’s and I’ve never seen them in the pupa stage before and was so freaked out. I took IPM in college and love this video thank you so much!!!!
I found two on my vegetable plants. I took them inside to feed them to my lizards when they become moths.
The berries on virginia creeper are poison to humans and you may get a skin reaction after touching it
Thanks for the tip just noticed we have them here in 🇫🇷
I found the caterpillar of this moth in Enniskillen, Ontario Conservation area.
I was getting rid of a Oriental bittersweet pulling out the vines and as I was looking for stuff to pull out I came across a lot of -- what I later discover to be -- Virginia creeper. It's amazing how long the roots can be when you pull them up. Dozens of feet even. Interesting to know that they're native and provide plans for the lovely birds. I am a bird fan. I need to decide how seriously I want to try to control the growth of this stuff. I've been pulling it off my mom's pool fence for years
I need this. I have bamboo soon to be gone and a garden
Jontron?
Thank you for that pointer 😘👍
What animallooks like a dog
Hi John 👋
My wild amaranth seems to not get much herbivory at all, but cultivated is really hard. Are the wild amaranths you find as a 'weed' a different species, or just less attractive/more resistant to pigweed flea beetles?
Do you have seeds from the tree ?. If you do, please can i have some. Thanks.
why not just flip the envelope over to show the body???
This told me nothing helpful. 😢
😂😂😂 💀💀💀
How can i get some tree, thanks.
The cemetery my daughter and I walk at is covered in it … now I can relax 😮💨 thanks!!
It's possible to use specific frequencies to repel bugs via sound waves, unfortunately I don't know which ones work, but considering bugs have ears of sorts it would work Though you would need to find the right tone to repel each kind of bug
So cool. Thank you for posting this video with lots of info.
I agree with the comments below. They're native, beautiful and help support our wildlife. They are the host plant for fritillary butterflies and their leaves are sustenance for other wildlife. In a lawn with clover, they stay both green when the turf grass can't handle the hot, dry times of summer. If we can't reduce our lawns, we should look for ways to make it more sustainable. Please leave the violets.
I guess I'm the only one that finds it sad that these remarkable insects will be destroyed on sight and never become the amazing sphinx moth. One of the fastest moths in the world, the are shaped like an airplane and can actually fly 30 miles per hour. Not to mention moths are beneficial pollinators as well.
I'm leaving these guys alone so they can turn into moths!
Thank you so much!!!!
Them mater plants are small. Mine are 14'+ and 10'+ wide.
Mine grew so fast and yes, got some tomatoes but,,, they stopped growing. Just flat out stopped and the tomatoes on there now are half the size..just not growing. Watered well fish emulsion once a month. Plants about 2 months old.
Your tomato plant is starving!Tomatoes that are fruiting need more fertilizer than once a month fish emulsion. Try once a week, you'll see an improvement.
*It grew fine at first because it was using up nutrients from the soil. Now growth has halted because it used everything up.)
All I can do is cry, my tomatoes are like, 5 inches tall.
i like your video
Honestly, by the time tomato plants are that size, those leaves are best to prune anyway to promote better airflow to the plant which reduces the potential for pests and disease.
I love your energy, enthusiasm, and attention to detail. Thank you very much for what you do for life.
The leaves on the tall stems look very closely related to Water Hemlock, is this plant poisonous?
Virginia Creeper is a terrible plant to grow. When we bought our house I found it all over our property . It is invasive, aggressive and just about impossible to get rid of.
Invasive or not preferred?
This was so informative! Tysm!❤
The bee was a paid actor 😅 Great video! Thank you!
Are they equipped to take on the spotter lantern fly? Especially at nymph stage. The nymphs are very fast and can jump very far for a tiny bug.
Hi! Thank you for the info! So if a few berries on my tree have rust, am I still able to pick and eat the healthy looking berries on the tree? I would say 95% of berries don’t have the rust, and I’d really like to eat them if I can 😊
Very informative, thanks!
Love this video. I have these cutouts on my redbud. So happy to provide what they need in my yard. 😊
Who ever plant it? Goutweed is very noxious within it's native range, almost impossible to remove it from mixed plantings. I thought it's well-known enough to prevent anyone from deliberate planting it.
This is the only information I’ve been able to find on what has been growing in my garden! Are more people finding this, and I saw suggestion from someone in comments for Casoron- I will look for that and if anyone has other suggestions, please let me know! Thank you so much for this video! You are wonderful
3 let it be, is my new hiking and gardening saying in my tool belt. Thanks.
Cooking oil removes the urushiol.
I heard an old fashioned laundry soap called Fells Naptha works too
@@kmastanz I've seen that soap. Never tried it. Urushiol is a non-polar molecule like all oils. Water is polar. Soap is a combination of the two. Better to use the oil to remove the urushiol and then the soap to remove the cooking oil. Crisco will work too. It's just hydrogenated cooking oil. Thank you for the comment. Always welcome.
Beautiful!!! 🌸 Thank you!! (So glad you didn’t fall into the water 😂)
Thanks for the video. Found one in my house just now. I thought I was crazy hearing clicks until I saw the little guy. Jumped right out of my hand a few times taking ‘em outside.
My pepper plants were so short so I removed the little buds and then saw all these tinier buds and removed them too. Wondering if I will end up with only a few peppers because of this. Oh well
